Slow life, Gigs and stuff..

It's been a slow start to Cornish life.. May was very quiet and we spent most of the time either sorting or sleeping. We were a little stunned to be here so soon and we felt displaced and unsettled. June, on the other hand, has a different feel. We are more settled, have even gathered the bones of a routine to our days and started to integrate a minute amount to Portscatho life. I have started to refer to our rental as 'home', and it's starting to feel like it. I'm beginning to become familiar with the roads around us and drive a little less like a tourist and more like a local. I have a strong feeling that this is going to be a happy place to live. All very different to how I felt in May.

June is looking good. I have dived headlong into Interior Design and am absolutely loving it. It seems to channel all of the things I love or are in my blood. Planning... I love planning. In my last job I project managed an extension of our village shop to incorporate a cafe and planned the interior, how it was all going to work, who we would stock, new staff, staff training, procedures and systems.. the lot, and loved it. As soon as the day to day running of it all became sorted and smooth, I got bored... It's the planning I love. Fabrics and textiles are in my heritage. My family ran a well established and successful furniture and furnishings company for generations, so the interior design feels a little like going back to my roots.

But surely, the most exciting thing has to be the Gig! Luckily, for us, Portscatho and Gerrans started a Rowing Club last month with the most beautiful Gig you have ever seen (well, I maybe biased). The club is designed for locals to get together to go out on the Gig - no prior experience necessary and not competitive - just social. Everything I love! Last night was the first practise I could make and was almost not going to go as I wouldn't have Mr M for support. However, I donned my Big Girl Pants and went down. The Gig takes six rowers and a coxswain so you put your name on the board when you get down there and wait for your slot to come around. One of the organisers of the group had helped me get onto the Members Facebook page online and very sweetly recognised me as I arrived. Christ, a friendly face and a warm hello makes such a difference when you're going into a new atmosphere and are crapping yourself! (Thank you, Becky!)

I met a few of the other rowers and took to the water for the first time. Surprisingly, I don't think I made too much of a tit of myself. No hilarious anecdote to report... I didn't fall in, slap anyone else round the head with an oar, or break anything (although the head and oar thing was a close call at one point.. those oars are heavy and unwieldly to get in and out of the boat.... and they're really long!) The only thing I can report is that I had an absolute blast and I have a feeling that Gigging is going to be highly addictive for me! AND, I've started, VERY slowly, to meet people. Small steps.

This morning I walked from Portscatho a couple of miles along the SW coastal path to a cafe by Towans Beach for breakfast. It was a glorious morning and the big old sailing yachts were leaving Falmouth having been there for the Mille Cup. Just beautiful!

Finally... just in case you thought everything was roses here... I'll leave you with a few more of the hideous things we had to buy with the house.... yes, people... we have parted money for these hideous bits of regalia.... it still burns..
